Sweet Health With Honey

16 May

Found the following article in the Farmers Weekly (18 February 2011) by Johanita Louw on the benefits of honey:

Honey is a wonderful natural product that man has used since antiquity – a perfect instant energy provider and internal and external healing agent. To get the greatest benefit from honey, you should ideally have your own beehives or buy directly from a reputable farmer, so that the honey is raw and unheated.

One of honey’s unique qualities is that it attracts moisture. This action is used for healing internally. Researchers have found that it treats diarrhoea in children faster than sugar, by stabilising the contents of the digestive tract. This same quality works effectively on virtually all types of wounds, since honey draws moisture away from wounds and abrasions so that germs have no moisture in which to multiply and cause infection.

Before anitbiotics, honey was used to treat skin wounds. Cosmetic companies use honey’s hygroscopic quality to treat dehydrated skin. Eating (and chewing) comb honey (with the wax) can be a highly effective treatment for hay fever, sinusitis and a chronic stuffy nose.

Honey also disinfects by actively killing many types of bacteria. Raw, unprocessed honey is best as it contains the antiseptic compound hydrogen peroxide. A useful tip for anyone who’s a caregiver to invalids is to ask a pharmacist to make up a salve consisting of 50% honey and 50% Betadine as a dressing for bedsores.

Honey in combination with potassium rich apple cider vinegar has a sedative effect and is good for insomnia, according to Dr DC Jarvis, author of Folk Medicine.
